'Pandemic is still a very real factor in our community': COVID-19 task force

The pandemic will continue to affect Canberra according to the head of ACT Policing's COVID-19 task force.

Detective superintendent Hall O'Meagher said while future cases of the virus will likely be from travellers returning from overseas, this does not mean Canberrans should stop being being vigilant.

A key example is the first case of COVID-19 recorded in over three months. On October 22, a diplomat who returned from overseas was found to have the virus. He was in quarantine after returning to the ACT on October 9, and officials have said due to his compliance there is little risk to the Canberra community.

"This case serves as a reminder that the pandemic is still a very real factor in our community, and we all need to continue to take social distancing and health directions seriously," Detective Superintendent O'Meagher said.

During the past week ACT Policing conducted 898 COVID-19 quarantine checks. This brings the total number of compliance checks since the beginning of the pandemic to over 15,600.

Detective superintendent O'Meagher said Canberra should expect to see more officers patrolling public events to ensure COVID-19 compliance.
