Pandemic forces another game off of NIU’s football schedule

The season opener against Rhode Island is the third football game to fall off of Northern Illinois’ 2020 schedule because of the coronavirus pandemic. | Mark Humphrey/AP

Northern Illinois’ football season opener against Rhode Island has been canceled.

Rhode Island and the rest of the Colonial Athletic Association announced last week that its members are suspending the 2020 football season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NIU-Rhode Island game was to be played Sept. 5 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

NIU’s games against Maryland and Iowa had already been canceled when the Big Ten decided to play a conference-only schedule. The Huskies’ Oct. 24 game against BYU was moved from SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview to DeKalb.
