Pandamonium: Justin Trudeau meets newly-named Canadian panda cubs

Justin Trudeau hails birth of panda cubs.

The first giant panda cubs to be born in Canada have been officially named in a ceremony attended by prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The cubs were named Jia Panpan (meaning Canadian Hope) and Jia Yueyue (Canadian Joy).

They were born to Er Shun, a giant panda currently on loan to Toronto Zoo from China.

The twins have been held in a special maternity area since their birth last October. But as of next week they will go on display to the public.

The cubs marked their 100th day in January, the point at which young pandas are considered to have survived their infancy.

Trudeau was thrilled to meet the pair, posting images of the encounter on social media.

The images of Trudeau cuddling the pandas delighted Twitter.
