A Chinese cafe where dogs are being painted to look like pandas in China has caused outrage on social media.

A video of the Cute Pets Game cafe in Chengdu featuring chow chow dogs painted black and white went viral on Chinese social media, The Guardian reported..

Chengdu, in the south-west province of Sichuan, is known as the home of the panda bear.

The owner of the cafe claimed that they bought the panda dogs pre-dyed.

However, the cafe also offered the service to patrons who wished to make their own panda dogs for 1,500 yuan (£165).

The owners of the cafe explained their rationale to local media: “Chengdu is the home of pandas. We wanted to do something different, to differentiate us from other regular dog cafes and pet shops."

The cafe said on its Weibo page that it would not continue to offer the dyeing service.

“As their owners, their lives are much better than ours. They are also very healthy. Netizens please don’t project your thoughts on to us", the owners said in a statement.
