Pancake kit: tested – in pictures

Pancake kit: Miffy pancake pan
Miffy frying pan and mould, £24.99
From miffyshop.co.uk
It seems unlikely that small children will need much persuasion to consume pancakes, but this Miffy pan is a great all-rounder for other, less appealing, culinary delights. A rabbit is for life, not just for Shrove Tuesday, after all. It's a good, robust non-stick design and the mould works particularly well for thicker, American-style pancakes – but can also be used to make fried eggs, or anything you think might slip down more easily when shaped like the cute character

Pancake kit: Spatulas for pancakes
Jumbo turner, £7.50 and flexible turner, £9
By Joseph Joseph at johnlewis.com
The jumbo turner's width makes it brilliant for those not blessed with professional pancake-flipping dexterity, while the little flexible turner is extremely maneouverable and can slide under the most stubborn crepe. It's also perfect for flipping American-style pancakes. Both very useful for all manner of other frying tasks too

Pancake kit: Whisk from Lakeland
Rotary whisk, £12
By johnlewis.com
A basic but nicely designed whisk for, well, whisking up the crepe batter. Unlike some of the really cheap models, this didn't induce blisters after a few minutes whisking

Pancake kit: Marks and Spencer juicer
Stainless steel juicer, £9.50
From marksandspencer.com
Juicers do pretty much what they say on the tin: you can pick up a glass one for a couple of quid, but if you planning on juicing a small orchard's-worth, then something with a deeper bowl might be useful. Also rather more stylish when in stainless steel ...

Pancake kit: Jamie Oliver pan for Tefal
Jamie Oliver pan, £15
By Tefal at debenhams.com
Irritating name aside, this pan is a very useful one – and given it's currently on sale, also a good price. It has a "Thermospot" that lets you know when it's hot enough – though we found it needed to be a bit hotter for quicker pancake-scoffing. For reference, we are pretty sure that squeezing lemon on pancakes and adding lots of sugar does not add to your "five a day", though. Nice try

Pancake kit: Lakeland pancake pan
Ceramic crepe pan, £19.99
From lakeland.co.uk
A ceramic pan with rounded edges, this is a great purchase for those who make pancakes regularly enough to devote an entire utensil to them. The "Ecolon ceramic" surface seems particularly effective at resisting stick, turning out pancakes well even on the first attempt

Pancake kit: Cuisinart griddle
Cuisinart griddle, £99
From lakeland.co.uk
What to get the pancake-devotee who has everything? A Cuisinart griddle, of course. While this is fantastic for making quick, mess-free American style pancakes, it's really a multipurpose gadget that will toast your panini, grill your breakfast and make you a cup of tea. Well, sadly not the latter, but you can't have everything. The removable griddle plates are dishwasher-safe and the heat adjustments are very sensitive
