Panathinaikos supremo Nikos Dabizas keen to forge links with Newcastle United

Former Newcastle United defender Nikos Dabizas was an interested spectator for the Premier League 2 play-off final at St Mary's Stadium.

The Toon cult hero - who netted a memorable winner against Sunderland in 2002 at the Stadium of Light - was in the stands to check out United's second string.

Dabizas is now the technical director of Greek giants Panathinaikos and ran the rule over a clutch of Newcastle youngsters.

Reports in Greece have linked Panathinaikos with soon-to-be-released Cal Roberts.

Roberts has come to the end of his contract and the winger's final official game for the Magpies came at St Mary's when he was used as a second-half sub during the 2-1 defeat.

Dabizas signed Mehdi Abeid from Newcastle in 2013 and could be looking for further opportunities to develop links with Panathinaikos.

Newcastle are soon to announce their retained list with Roberts the standout name of those set to be released.
