Pals raise money for St Andrew's Hospice by climbing Ben Nevis in memory of mum

St Andrew’s Hospice received a boost from a grateful supporter who scaled Britain’s highest peak in memory of her mum.

Debbie Green climbed Ben Nevis as part of a busy programme of fundraising activities in aid of the Airdrie charity.

She also teamed up with friend Caitlyn McKeown to tackle the Santa Dash at Strathclyde Park, run a fundraising event and carry out bag-packing at supermarkets to raise almost £2100.

The 24-year-old wanted to support the hospice in gratitude for the three months of care given to her mum, Marie, before she sadly died of cancer two years ago.

Debbie said: “The hospice staff were amazing, so that’s why I want to give something back – fundraising makes me feel like I’m doing something productive for a very worthwhile cause.”

The beauty student at New College Lanarkshire has faced great personal tragedy in recent years, having also lost her only sibling, older sister Charlene, and her father, Patrick, in the past four years.

She added: “College has been really good for me as it’s given me something to focus on – it’s definitely been a wee safe place. The lecturers have been amazing and my friends are definitely what keep me going.”

Hospice community development co-ordinator Andrew Flynn said: “Debbie has been an incredible supporter of St Andrew’s and we’re very grateful for all of the things she does.

“People who fundraise also inspire others to get involved, help, donate and make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

“It’s clear that Debbie is an inspiration who puts the needs of others first and it’s because of people like her that we’re able to raise £88,000 every week to provide specialised palliative care and end-of-life care to the people of Lanarkshire.

“We’d like to thank Debbie for just being herself and being brilliant!”
