Pals of tragic doctor Catriona Gaskell arrange charity football match in her honour

Friends of a Lanarkshire doctor who passed away last month have organised a charity football event in her memory.

The body of doctor Catriona Gaskell, who lived in Cambuslang, was found on August 14 after she went missing.

Now pals who regularly played football alongside the 26-year-old, who worked at the Hunter health centre in East Kilbride, will hold a four hour long 'footiethon' in Glasgow this Sunday, September 5.

Her teammates also decided that all proceeds from the afternoon matches, held at GOALS pitches in Shawlands, would go towards MacMillan Cancer, the charity that Dr Gaskell was fundraising for before her death.

Lesley Campbell, one of the organisers of the event, told Lanarkshire Live : "Cat played with all of us regularly and we wanted to do something in honour of her.

"Originally we were going to send a wreath to her family, but they have been keeping things very private, so we thought a charity event like this would be a nice way to remember her.

"When you're playing fives for that hour you're all besties, and we wanted to do something. We thought four hours would be a good time to play for, as that's roughly the same as a marathon and Cat was planning a marathon to raise money for MacMillan."

Already the group have raised £1170 for the good cause, and are hoping the figure will increase by Sunday.

On the day there will be 24 players taking part, spread across four teams, with matches being played in a tournament format across two pitches. Each match will last an hour.

Anyone who donates £10 via JustGiving will also be entered into a draw to win a Zoom Teeth Whitening package worth £359 that has been donated by Enhance Dental, Lesley's employer.

You can donate to the good cause here.
