Pals of Qatar drug charge Scot raise £16k ahead of crucial legal hearing next week

Pals of Qatar drug charge Scot Conor Howard have smashed an online fundraising target just days before a crucial legal hearing.

Lothian man Conor known to pals as 'Milky', had been arrested in Corfu when flying over to visit his mum in August.

The 27-year-old had been arrested on an Interpol notice after Qatar authorities say they found drugs on the 27-year-old when passing through the Middle Eastern state last October on the way back from a work trip to Australia.

His devastated friends and family say a clean cannabis grinder was found and after a court appearance they claim he was told to leave the country.

But he was picked up by Cofu cops and spent time in an island jail before being bailed recently and is at his parent's holiday home.

Conor will appear again in court on the island on November 4- with the potential of the Scot being allowed to return home or extradited to a tough 'desert prison'.

Supporters of the train worker had set up a fundraising drive to support legal costs and help Conor's parents Robert and Adele.

A target of £15,000 was set which has now been smashed with the total now standing at £16,288.

A group of his pals recently climbed Ben Nevis- boosting the cash reserves by £2,825.

Radha Stirling, of campaign group Detained in Dubai, is representing the family.

She told the BBC following the bail ruling: "He should never have been locked up in a Corfu jail in the first place. At the whim of a country notorious for Interpol and extradition abuse, a European country has been used as a conduit to unfairly detain a British national.

"Qatar has been responsible for a number of arrests and detentions inside the EU over the past 24 months. In none of these cases, were the victims extradited and in all cases I have dealt with, the victims were released and removed from Interpol's database.

"What this demonstrates is Qatar's misuse of Interpol.

"Although Conor has been finally granted bail, Greece has allowed Qatar until 4 November to present further evidence, meaning Conor is not allowed to return to Scotland and still risks being extradited to a desert prison."
