Palo Alto (15)
(Gia Coppola, 2013, US) Emma Roberts, Jack Kilmer, James Franco, Nat Wolff. 100 mins

Just as those famous surnames in the credits take some getting beyond, so this poetic but unpretentious teen drama finds credible characters beneath the familiar archetypes. There’s nothing all that new in its tapestry of parties, crushes, fumbles and growing pains, but that only helps transport viewers of all ages back to a state of hormonal adolescent limbo.

Citizenfour (PG)
(Laura Poitras, 2014, Ger/US) 120 mins

The riveting inside story on Edward Snowden, and despite the inherent spy-thriller aspects, Poitras lays it out calmly and clearly, giving as much weight to the issues as the diffident whistleblower himself.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (12A)
(Jonathan Liebesman, 2014, US) Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner. 101 mins

The cartoon heroes are reconfigured as a reptilian Swat team for this loud, under-brained actioner which could almost be Transformers in disguise.

The Judge (15)
(David Dobkin, 2014, US) Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga. 141 mins

Family and legal offences are on trial in this courtroom drama, as an accused smalltown judge (Duvall) enlists a city-smart defence lawyer (Downey), who’s also his estranged son.

Northern Soul (15)
(Elaine Constantine, 2014, UK) Elliot James Langridge, Steve Coogan

Another attempt to bottle the Wigan Casino spirit, with big names, petty crime and killer tunes woven into the story of two 1970s lads bitten by the soul bug.

Björk: Biophilia Live (U)
(Nick Fenton, Peter Strickland, 2014, UK) 97 mins

Far from your average concert movie, this adds visual flourishes to Björk’s cosmically inventive show.

The Best Of Me (12A)
(Michael Hoffman, 2014, US) James Marsden, Michelle Monaghan, Luke Bracey. 118 mins

Childhood sweethearts trudge the cliche-strewn road of second chance romance.

My Name Is Hmmm (PG)
(Agnès Troublé, 2013, Fra) Sylvie Testud, Lou-Lélia Demerliac. 121 mins

Designer Agnès B’s dilettantish directing hampers the story of an abused French runaway who finds sanctuary with a Scottish truck driver.

United We Fall (15)
(Gary Sinyor, 2014, UK) Jack Donnelly, Ryan Pope, James Rastall. 89 mins

Mockumentary on barely fictitious Manchester United footballers.

Cathedrals Of Culture (12A)
(Various, 2014, Ger) 165 mins

Six directors (including Michael Madsen, Wim Wenders, Karim Aïnouz and Robert Redford) offer 3D musings on modern architecture.

Black Butler(15)
(Kentarô Ohtani, Keiichi Sato, 2014, Jap) Hiro Mizushima, Jonathan Brooks. 119 mins

Confused manga adaptation centring on a futuristic aristocrat and her devilish manservant.

The Battles Of Coronel And Falkland Islands (PG)
(Walter Summers, 1927, UK) 100 mins

Restored and re-scored silent action movie, recreating decisive first world war naval battles.
