Palmer seeking $1.8 billion in damages from Queensland Nickel liquidators

Businessman Clive Palmer says he is seeking $1.8 billion in damages from the administrators and liquidators of his Townsville nickel refinery.

It is part of a counterclaim being made in the long-running court case over the future of Queensland Nickel (QNI).

QNI collapsed in 2016 with $300 million in debts, putting more than 800 people out of work.

Mr Palmer, his nephew Clive Mensink and 19 other people are being sued for about $500 million by liquidators PPB Advisory, who were appointed by the Federal Government.

Last July, PPB Advisory lodged a claim with the Supreme Court of Queensland to regain money for creditors, employee entitlements and compensation from Mr Palmer's companies, including QNI.

Today, Mr Palmer confirmed he had lodged documentation with the Supreme Court for a damages claim of his own.

He said the claim was being made principally against QNI administrator and FTI Consulting managing director John Park and Stephen Parbery from PPB Advisory.

Mr Palmer said the liquidators had caused nearly $2 billion in lost value when they closed the refinery at Yabulu in 2016.

"We're now ensuring the individual liquidators will pay for it and the true story will come out," he said.

"We're also suing the special purpose liquidator for a similar amount because he was complicit in it and we have every confidence that'll be successful.

"Queensland Nickel didn't need to go into liquidation — Mr Mensink offered to pay all of the accounts, all of the bills, and offered additional cash for the business.

"We haven't been dragging it on, we couldn't put our counterclaim until they did all their work."

Mr Palmer described the appointment of QNI liquidators as a "politically motivated witch-hunt".

"The liquidators are all part of a government agenda to divert me away from serving the people of Australia, who I love," he said.
