A Palestinian was killed and at least 21 wounded on Friday in an explosion that went off during a demonstration on the eastern border of Gaza City as Palestinians factions set the stage for talks in Cairo.
Medical sources said the dead man was named Mohammed Abu Halima, 22, from Shujaiya neighborhood. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that he was wounded in the chest east of the Gaza Strip without specifying the cause of the injury.
According to local Palestinian sources, the explosion was caused by a hand grenade that young people were trying to throw at the Israeli army during the weekly demonstrations on the border, noting that there were serious injuries.
Meanwhile, delegations from the Palestinian factions are preparing to travel to the Egyptian capital through the Rafah border crossing during the next few days and weeks to conduct bilateral and collective consultations as well as meetings with the Egyptian intelligence on several issues concerning inter-Palestinian reconciliation and tension with Israel.
Palestinian sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that Azzam al-Ahmad, a leader of the Fatah Movement, who is currently in Cairo, has met with officials from the Egyptian intelligence service, expressing his movement’s willingness to resume the reconciliation process with Hamas.
Hamas is currently forming a senior delegation to head to Cairo, where Ismail Haniyeh is expected to be accompanied by leaders such as Khalil Hayyeh and Rouhi Moshtaha, who will be joined by a delegation from abroad, including Moussa Abu Marzouk and Hussam Badran, according to sources from Hamas who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat.
The sources added that in case Haniyeh declined to travel, the Gaza delegation would be led by Yehya al-Senwar, the movement's leader in the sector.
