The Palestinian Authority (PA) remained silent on the Israeli elections despite Hamas movement saying it doesn’t trust “any changes in Israeli society.”
The PA refrained from commenting on the elections, deeming it an “internal affair.”
Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that instructions have been made to abstain from issuing statements on the elections.
Following previous accusations against the PA of interfering in the elections, Palestine is avoiding backing a party at the expense of another.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the Authority of interfering in the elections by influencing Arab voters.
Commenting on this, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said the difference between the two biggest party leaders, was as insignificant as that between Pepsi and Coke.
"We don't trust any changes in Israeli society," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said.
"It is all the byproduct of the Zionist project, the goal of which is to entrench the foundations of the Zionist entity at the expense of Palestinian rights.
The identity of the next Israeli government won't change the nature of the conflict with this occupier, and it is deemed an occupying entity that must be resisted. The election results won't affect our people's struggle until we defeat this occupation," Barhoum added.
In a statement, several Palestinian factions in Gaza said that “the Israeli occupation elections will not change the reality of the brutality and aggression practiced against the Palestinian people.”
“It does not matter whether Netanyahu or someone else wins the elections. They are all enemies of the Palestinian people,” the statement read.
