Palenque Edinburgh staff left gutted after daylight jewel raid ruins Royal Mile festive efforts

Gutted Palenque staff have spoken out after their shop on Edinburgh's Royal Mile was targeted in a daylight raid.

Police were called to the city centre store at around 8am on Sunday morning after crooks smashed their way through the shop window and stole items of jewellery.

Josie Marwick, store manager, confirmed no items of substantial value were stolen as these are removed from the shop window for security reasons.

However she says staff have been left extremely frustrated after working round the clock to create a striking festive window display, only to see it trashed just hours after its completion.

She said: "Unfortunately our High Street shop window was smashed between 7.45 and 8am. Police Scotland were quick on the scene and if anyone has any information regarding the incident please contact them directly.

"Luckily for security reasons we take all items of substantial value out of our windows at night. We worked late [on Saturday night] to add the finishing touches to our Christmas window and we were excited to unveil the results until the incident happened.

"But we want to reassure our customers we will be back open very soon to showcase our new window display and bring a little festive cheer to the Royal Mile. In the meantime we want to thank everyone for their concern and support and remind customers that our shop at 99 Rose Street is open for business as usual."

Police erected a cordon outside the shop early on Sunday morning with officers at the scene for a number of hours.

They said their enquiries were ongoing in their attempts to solve the crime.
