Palang Pracharath targeted for naming Prayut

High-profile policeman turned politician Seripisut Temiyavet says he will ask the Election Commission to disband the pro-regime Palang Pracharath Party for nominating the man who seized power in a military coup as its prime ministerial candidate.

Pol Gen Seripisut, leader of the Seri Ruam Thai Party, said on Friday that he would ask the EC whether the nomination was an act deemed “hostile against the rule of constitutional monarchy”.

The former police chief is not the first to raise the question. Vinyat Chartmontri, secretary-general of the United Lawyers for Rights and Liberty group, earlier on Friday submitted a letter to the EC asking for the same action to be taken.

“The EC accused the Thai Raksa Chart Party of committing the offence when the party nominated Princess Ubolratana as its PM candidate. I wonder whether Palang Pracharath is also at fault for nominating Gen Prayut,” said Pol Gen Seripisut.

“I’d like to ask Khun Prayut: You seized power from someone else. Although you’ve been granted a royal pardon, is your action deemed hostile to the constitutional monarchy?”

The wrongdoing by Palang Pracharath was even more obvious than what Thai Raksa Chart did, he added.

The former police chief said he wondered how long it would take for the EC to consider his complaint, given that it took just three days for it to recommend that the Constitutional Court dissolve Thai Raksa Chart.

“If I make the exact same accusation [about Palang Pracharath], will the EC do it? If not, I’ll also press charges against it for dereliction of duty,” he said.
