Best-selling novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me has been acquired for a Bollywood adaptation, according to the Mumbai Mirror.
The book, written by freelance journalist Saba Imtiaz, follows the exploits of a progressive-thinking writer who drinks and smokes, putting her at odds with the traditions that surround her in Karachi. The book has been called Pakistan’s answer to Bridget Jones’ Diary but the film-makers are planning to change the location to India.
Tentatively titled Delhi, You’re Killing Me, the screenplay will be worked on by Imtiaz, who used her own experiences to inspire her novel. She describes it as “a comedy of manners in a city with none” and the film’s producer Vikram Malhotra is hoping that the unconventional heroine will resonate with women “as they will see a slice of their lives in it”.
The book, published last year by Random House India, follows Ayesha who tries to juggle her often dangerous job with her search for a husband but, according to the official synopsis, her most pressing problem is “how to straighten her hair during the chronic power outages”.
The adaptation is being handled by Mumbai-based company Abundantia Entertainment, who recently released action film Baby.
