Pakistan vs England: Ben Stokes returns for second Test, takes captaincy duty

England captain Ben Stokes returned to the England XI for the second Test against Pakistan which will be played on the same Multan pitch as the record-breaking first Test.

Stokes, who had been out since the beginning of August with a hamstring injury, bowled comfortably in the nets on Sunday in preparation for the second Test, which starts on Tuesday.

Other changes to the visitors' lineup include Gus Atkinson and Chris Woakes being rested. Making up the other change in the side is seamer Matt Potts, who has returned for the first time since the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka at the end of August.

England seamers were made to toil in the first Test, despite their innings win: Atkinson bowled 39 overs, Brydon Carse 38 and Woakes 35. Atkinson and Woakes both played all six Tests of England's home summer while Carse should be much fresher after spending June, July and August serving a ban.

Ben Duckett keeps his place at the top of the order after recovering from a dislocated thumb sustained on Day 2 of the first Test, while Jamie Smith will return to No. 7 to allow Stokes to return in his favoured role at No. 6.

England will boast of an unchanged spin-bowling duo - Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir - despite Bashir taking just one wicket in the first Test. Rehan Ahmed is the other spinner in the squad.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have opted to use the same pitch that produced some high run-scoring in the first Test. Ahead of the second clash, the pitch was cordoned off and blown by two large fans at each end. The creases and bowlers’ footmarks have been repaired.

The pitch had attracted much attention because of its flat nature. After Pakistan made 556 batting first, England broke a host of records by posting 823/7 declared, their highest total since 1938.

England eventually won by an innings and 47 runs, relegating Pakistan to the unwanted record of becoming the team with the largest first-innings total to go on and suffer such a defeat.

After the embarrassment, Pakistan have omitted former captain Babar Azam and seamers Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi from their 16-man squad for the final two Tests.

England's XI for the second Test: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith, Brydon Carse, Matt Potts, Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir.
