Pakistan stock exchange comes under attack by gunmen, CEO says all attackers killed

The Pakistan stock exchange came under attack by gunmen this morning, the bourse said in a statement.

All four gunmen were killed, according to reports, however, the incident highlighted the fragile state of geopolitics in the region.

It appears the attackers were trying to take control of the Karachi Stock Exchange building.

Internal security at the exchange managed to hold off the attackers, CEO Farrukh Khan told Bloomberg.

A "clearing up operation" was now taking place, he said.

Shares on the KSE-100 Index fell sharply after news of the attack broke but quickly regained their poise to be up 0.2% after the attackers were killed - higher than their levels before the incident.

Foreign Office advice to UK travellers warns "terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Pakistan. There's a high threat of terrorism, kidnap and sectarian violence throughout the country, including the major cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi."
