Pakistan plane crash: Military aircraft smashes into homes after take off killing 17

Horror photos show the moment a military plane crashed into homes in a city in Pakistan killing 17 people.

Terrifying footage shows a huge fireball erupting after the training flight smashed into a built up area of Rawalpindi in the early hours of the morning.

Five crew members on board the aircraft and another 12 people on the ground were killed in the crash, officials have confirmed.

The website of newspaper The News carried footage showing a building engulfed in flames.

Pictures from the scene show still smoking buildings that have been reduced to rubble.

Rescue teams were quickly on the scene and extinguished the fire before taking the injured to hospital.

Those killed include two pilots and five soldiers but the death toll may rise with many still in a critical condition.

Rescue official Farooq Butt said:   "A small plane crashed into a residential area.

"So far we have retrieved 15 dead bodies, including 10 civilians and five crew members."

There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash or the type of aircraft involved.

An emergency was declared in three major hospitals after the incident which was the deadliest in Pakistan since 152 died on board an Airbus 321 in Karachi.
