Pakistan name Asif Ali in World Cup squad despite death of daughter

Asif Ali was on Monday morning called up to Pakistan's World Cup squad, the day after his daughter lost her battle with cancer.

The death of Asif’s daughter in hospital in the US was announced by Islamabad United, Asif’s Pakistan Super League team.

“ISLU family pays its deepest condolences to @AasifAli2018 on the tragic loss of his daughter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Asif & his family,” the PSL franchise tweeted.

“Asif is a great example of strength & courage. He is an inspiration to us.”

Following the series defeat against England, in which he played all five matches and twice scored fifties, Ali was one of three changes to Pakistan’s World Cup squad.

The other two are familiar faces, with Mohammad Amir called in after recovering from chickenpox and Wahab Riaz back despite not having played an ODI since the 2017 Champions Trophy.

Abid Ali, Faheem Ashraf and Junaid Khan are all dropped. As a result, Pakistan will not have a reserve wicketkeeper for the tournament.
