Pakistan bus crash: At least 17 passengers killed as vehicle falls down gorge

At least 17 people are dead after a bus they travelled in fell down a gorge in northern Pakistan.

The fatalities have been confirmed by police in the country, who said that number of bodies have been recovered from the bus crash thus far.

Officer Abdul Ghafoor said the bus was heading to Rawalpindi from Ghiberti in Gilgit Baltistan.

During this trip, on Sunday, it fell into the deep gorge in the Kohistan District.

At least one woman was also left with slight injuries.

A lack of communication to the remote area has caused delays in rescue efforts.

The cause of the incident has not been confirmed.

Dawn News reported that an eyewitness said the incident was in the evening.

However, due to lack of phone signal they were unable to report it until later on.

It was reported that rescue teams were struggling due to falling darkness in the area.

Similar incidents are not rare in Pakistan.

Three military personnel died when a car plunged into a ravine last December, Dawn News reported.
