Paisley teen tried to hit cop with bottle

A teenage girl has dodged a jail stretch for trying to club a policeman on the head with a glass bottle in Paisley .

Chloe McNamara, 19, lunged at the officer before swinging the weapon.

The Paisley teen suffered a panic attack in the dock after being warned she could face prison.
But she escaped with community service after being convicted at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Craig Harris insisted he would have been justified in locking her up.

He said: “I heard the trial and I know what the circumstances are. The second charge, in particular, is exceptionally serious.

“Attempting to assault a police officer is a serious matter.

“Assault with a glass bottle and trying to strike them on the head is an incredibly serious matter.

“The court would be well-entitled to send you to custody.”

McNamara attacked PC Jack Brown after he arrived to probe a row near Paisley town centre .

She launched a foul-mouthed rant, sparking police action on April 15 last year.

The officer tried to calm her during the drama in George Street - but she turned on him.

She grabbed a glass bottle and swung wildly at him, and was then arrested after she tried to hammer him on the head during the rammy.

McNamara denied the offences but was found guilty after a trial.

But proceedings were delayed after she broke down.

Defence lawyer David Nicholson admitted his client had a lot of growing up to do.
He said: “She’s 19. She has her own tenancy. She recognises the effect of her conduct.

“She has a diagnosis of anxiety and it is likely this has contributed to her lifestyle.

“There’s a level of emotional immaturity on her part.”

McNamara has been placed under supervision for two years, and she must meet with social workers who will report back to the court.

Failing to attend appointments can see her being brought back to face a further charge.

The teenager has also been ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Sheriff Harris told her she must work with experts to ensure there is no further offending.

He added: “I think, as well as punishment for these offences, what you need is a lengthy period of supervision.

“I am concerned living in a tenancy yourself at a young age, you are a risk of going seriously off the rails.”

McNamara, of George Street, has been told to complete the unpaid work within 12 months.
