Paisley property boom: House prices jump by 15 per cent

Paisley has seized the crown as the fastest growing property hotspot in the UK.

The astonishing 15 per cent rise in house prices has unexpectedly thrust the town into pole position.

The increase is equivalent to the take-home pay of some workers.

The average asking price has risen £16,183 in just a year . . . that’s £1,348 every month.

Curtis Chisholm, director at top town estate agency Cochran Dickie, said: “The demand for Paisley can be attributed to the fact that you can get more for your money here than in Glasgow’s West End or Southside.

“The commuting is easy and is coupled with quality homes in very desirable addresses.

“Paisley is a very historical town with fabulous culture.”

The town beat Lancaster and Wigan into second and third spots in the house sales data, compiled by online selling group Rightmove.

Rightmove reported that access to the great outdoors and plenty of space in and around Paisley may have led to the lockdown price surge.

People in more built-up areas have craved the extra space.

The 2020 data shows the average cost of buying a Paisley home was £126,903, up from £110,720.

That price is well under half of the UK’s average price of £318,580.

And £34,619 less than the average Scottish price of £161,522.

Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s director of property, said: “Demand for property in Paisley is very high at the moment, with searches for homes to buy in the town having risen by 44% compared to this time last year.

“Naturally, demand leads to rising prices and with swathes of rolling countryside on the doorstep, it makes sense that Paisley is such a popular destination for home movers looking for more space.

“With regards to the other price hotspots in our table, it’s interesting that places in the North West are continuing to perform really strongly.”
