Paisley powerhouse Carlin secures second medal of Tokyo Games

Paisley powerhouse Jack Carlin has secured his second medal of the Tokyo Games.

The 24 year old grabbed bronze in the Olympic men’s sprint with victory over Denis Dmitriev, adding to his silver medal for Great Britain in the team event.

Jack had earlier fallen to reigning world champion Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

But he returned to the track an hour later to see off Dmitriev, of the Russian Olympic Committee.

The former Gleniffer High School pupil comfortably won the first round of the best-of-three contest but had to strain for the second as Dmitriev came flying around the outside.

Speaking after the event, he said: “It was a tough day today.

“I didn’t have the same in the legs as I did yesterday but I gave it my all and managed to come away with something.

“I got 20th at the Worlds last year and I said to myself that I’d never be in that place again.

“We focused a lot on the individual event in this extra year and it paid off.”

Carlin is continuing a superb debut Games, adding bronze to the silver he won alongside Jason Kenny and Ryan Owens in the team sprint.

The men’s keirin kicks-off on Saturday, offering Carlin a chance to complete the set.

Ahead of that event and the chance to win gold at Tokyo 2020, Carlin added: “What was it that Jonny Brownlee said? ‘Completed it mate”. We’ll see...’”

And the local lad has won the support of his hero Chris Hoy who described the rider as an incredible successor to him on the track.

“It’s wonderful to see another Scottish sprinter coming through,” he said.

“He didn’t put a foot wrong in this whole competition.

“He has a great future ahead of him and it’s his mental strength that’s as impressive as his physical strength.”
