Unconscious driver downed methadone then told cops 'it's the only thing that can get me to sleep'

A motorist found unconscious in a car told cops he had knocked back methadone to help him snooze.

Michael Collins, 37, passed out with a window down and the keys still in the ignition.

His lips and tongue were coated in a blue residue.

Collins admitted he had downed the powerful opiate and told officers: “It’s the only thing that can get me to sleep.”

He admitted being in charge of the car while unfit through drugs at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor John Penman revealed a neighbour had noticed him and raised the alarm.

He said: “Police observed a male asleep in the front passenger seat.

“They observed him asleep with his head back and his mouth open.

“The corners of his mouth had blue-coloured residue.

“His lips and tongue were similarly stained.

“They attempted to rouse him, but had difficulty doing so. Once they did, he appeared extremely drowsy and was blinking slowly.

“He had slurred and slow speech. His demeanour ranged from laughing and friendly to hostile and angry in quick succession.

“Officers did not note any smell of alcohol.”

Collins was out cold when he was spotted parked up in Paisley’s Galloway Avenue .

A neighbour grew suspicious after spying the blue Vauxhall Astra.

Police arrived and found the keys still in the ignition.

They managed to remove them without him waking up.

Collins admitted to officers: “I took some methadone in the car – it’s the only thing that can get me to sleep.”

He was searched and a bag of cannabis was found in his left sock.

He was arrested and taken in for questioning.

Collins was examined by a doctor and agreed to take a urine test, but backed out at the last minute.

Defence lawyer David Nicholson offered no explanation for his client’s behaviour.

The motorist also pled guilty to refusing to give a test specimen and possession of cannabis.

The court heard he had already been banned from the road for an earlier drink-driving offence.

Sheriff Tom McCartney called for background reports.
He said: “I understand you are currently subject to a Community Payback Order.

“I want to hear about your circumstances and what is happening with that order.

“You will be disqualified on an interim basis – but you were already disqualified anyway.”

Collins, of Springbank Road, Paisley , has been ordered to return for sentencing on April 30.
