Paisley man jailed after throwing a letterbox through his girlfriend's bedroom window

A drunk lout who threw a letterbox through his girlfriend’s bedroom window has been jailed.

Shaun Connell, of West Campbell Street, Paisley, flouted a bail order by contacting his partner and throwing a letterbox through her bedroom window.

Connell appeared in the dock from custody yesterday and procurator fiscal depute, Maria Murdoch explained to the court that Connell, 33, had three complaints against him.

She told the court: “Around 11.30pm on October 21, the witness was within her home when she heard her door knocked.

“She heard a voice shouting and recognised it to be Connell.

“He tried to gain entry by opening the locked door a number of times, but the witness refused entry as she knew Connell had special bail conditions in place.

“The witness made her way up to the bedroom and opened the window.

“She placed Connell’s property in a bag and placed it out of the window on to the pavement.

“She saw Connell at her front door again and he appeared under the influence. He was shouting at her.

“Connell then removed the letterbox from her door and threw it through the bedroom window.

“She closed the window and contacted the police.”

Paisley Sheriff Court heard police attended and that Ms Murdoch had received a phone call from a number she had saved as ‘Shaun Connell new’.

Depute fiscal Maria Murdoch added: “The phone call lasted about one minute and it was of a male voice uttering threats stating, ‘you’re a f*****g grass, you’re going to get two black eyes.’

“Connell was traced within the living room of his neighbour’s property at 2.30am.”

The court also heard that Connell had an argument with Ms Murdoch in the street just a few days prior.

And on October 10, at 11.10pm, while police were dealing with another matter, they saw Connell breaching a bail order.

When they arrested him, he pulled away from cops and swore at them, stating, ‘My brother will do you in. You homo f*****g b******s. You are getting f*****g done in. I’ll remember your faces, f*****g pr***s’.

Connell’s defence agent explained his client had recently served a jail term.

He told the court: “Since his release from prison, Connell has had his difficulties and they are often founded by his misuse of alcohol.

“This man leads a chaotic lifestyle and, following his release from prison he very quickly ended up drinking again.

“In fact, alcohol is an underlying factor in all of these offences.

“When he attended at the property, he was actually going to get his epilepsy tablets and give his partner her medication and money to assist financially to their child.

“She remains supportive of him and is of the view that they are still in a relationship.”

Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill said: “I would be sympathetic if he was turning up at 9am asking for his medication and offering financial support, but he’s turning up at 1.30am and under the influence of alcohol.

“You have appeared in front of me with three complaints and you have a dreadful record, including dishonesty, and you have an outstanding matter.

“Due to there being no electricity in your flat you can’t be placed on a restriction of liberty order and I have my doubts about unpaid work in the community.

“I am going to impose a custodial sentence.”

Sheriff Gill sentenced Connell to six months in jail.
