Paisley councillor calls police in after vile leaflet targeting his family is delivered to hundreds of homes across town

Hundreds of vile leaflets mocking a Paisley councillor and his family have been put through letterboxes across the town.

Eddie Devine, the leader of the Labour group at Renfrewshire Council, his wife and daughter have been ridiculed in the comic book-style pamphlet.

References to family members’ weight and appearance have been printed alongside foul language.

The leaflets have been circulated to homes in areas including Charleston, Lochside and Glenburn - and police have been called in.

Although the crass drawings and crude attempts at humour fail to make much sense, the impact is clear.

Eddie, whose ward is Paisley Southeast, said: “It is absolutely disgusting really and it has caused me and my wife and daughter a good deal of upset. There is really no need for it at all.

“We can’t say for certain who it is, but we have a very good suspicion given what’s in it.

“We have been to the police about it. It’s really upsetting and unnecessary.”

The Labour man says his friends, family, constituents and complete strangers have all reached out to offer their backing.

“It has been overwhelming actually,” he said.

“We have heard from lots of different people who have all said how disgusting it is.

“And I want to thank them all because it has made a huge difference and shows there are a lot of good people out there who still know what the decent thing is.”

Eddie said the last 18 months have been extremely difficult after a former councillor was banned when he was found to have engaged in a bullying and harassment campaign against him and his family.

“We were offered a panic button by the police at one point,” he explained.

“It has been really hard for the whole family so this just adds to the worry.

“But, again, so many people have been so supportive and that has been really pleasing to us as a family.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed no criminality had been established in relation to the pamphlet.
