Pair shared racist Snapchat video about Home Secretary Priti Patel

Two men sent an offensive Snapchat video including a racial slur about Home Secretary Priti Patel that was viewed millions of times.

The shocking 50-second clip was shared widely after it was posted on a closed Snapchat group by Jake Henderson, 30, of Retford, and shared on another closed group by Robert Cumming, 26, of Doncaster.

In the video, Henderson used a racially abusive word to describe Ms Patel following a Covid-19 briefing.

In the video played to magistrates in Mansfield on Tuesday, Henderson could be heard saying: “As a white man, I won’t be listening to people of colour.”

The clip Cumming reposted included a comment at the top saying, "Oh, haters, going to be hating" followed by four laughing Emojis, which prosecutor Dan Church said was clearly an endorsement of those views set out by Henderson.

Mr Church told magistrates the prosecution believed the video was “motivated by hostility towards members of racial groups”.

Among statements taken by police was one from a Rotherham councillor, who was upset about the content of the video, which had also made a specific reference to Rotherham.

The councillor, who described being a victim of racial abuse, said: "I feel the comments were directed at everyone in Rotherham, especially the Asian community".

And she said her greatest fear was someone "will be attacked locally, as has happened previously".

Cumming and Henderson appeared separately before justices at Mansfield Magistrates' Court to enter their guilty pleas on Tuesday, June 29.

The pair pleaded guilty to a single charge of sending a grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing message or matter via a public communication network.

The offence was between January 20 and January 23 this year.

Cumming was interviewed on January 26. He admitted he saved Henderson's video so he could upload it to his Snapchat account. He posted the video to show his disagreement with Henderson.

A pre-sentence report was ordered and sentencing will be at 3pm on August 12.
