Pair rescued from St Mary's Island after getting trapped by tide at 4am

Two people had to be rescued by a lifeboat crew in the early hours after becoming stranded on St Mary's Island off the North East coast.

The pair had been cut off by the tide and were unable to use the causeway path to travel back to the mainland.

They rang for help and the Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat was paged at 4.12am on Sunday to rescue them.

The crew launched quickly and found the casualties, who were described as cold but otherwise fine.

They were taken on board the lifeboat and brought safely back to Cullercoats lifeboat station, where they were handed into the care of the Blyth Coastguard team, who returned them to their car.

All units were then stood down.

A spokesperson for the Cullercoats RNLI said: "If you are visiting the coast, please check the tide times to avoid getting caught out.

"In this situation, the casualties did the right thing by staying put and calling for help.

"If you see someone, or are in trouble yourself, at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

This is the 30th call out in 2019 for the Cullercoats crew and the fifth in five days.
