Pair of Husky defensive backs drafted by division rivals

The 2019 NFL draft has long been considered one of the deepest defensive drafts in recent memory. Among the biggest names were a pair of defensive backs from the University of Washington, cornerback Byron Murphy and safety Taylor Rapp.

Considering the need for depth in Seattle’s secondary, and the obvious proximity with UW, many analysts projected the Seahawks would select either one or both of the Huskies. However, to the dismay of Seahawks fans who root for UW, this reality was never to be.

With the No. 33 overall pick, the first in the second round of the NFL draft, the Cardinals snagged Murphy. The Cardinals have now found an excellent running mate to pair with their star corner, Patrick Peterson, making their already talented secondary a little more stingy.

As for Rapp, the likelihood of the Seahawks drafting him dropped considerably after Seattle selected Marquise Blair from Utah with the No. 47 overall pick. Rapp was eventually selected 14 spots later . . . by Seattle’s division rival, the Rams.

Rapp will now join wily veteran Eric Weddle to patrol the back end of Los Angeles’ stacked defense.

For the Husky fans who are also 12s, they will still get to see two of their favorite players twice a year at CenturyLink Field.

Unfortunately for them, they will be defending against the Seahawks, and a Seattle wide receiving corps that could be permanently without Doug Baldwin.
