Pair of ex-Jets find new homes over the weekend

After being waived by the Jets on Saturday, CB Derrick Jones has been claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers.

Jones, a former sixth-round pick, was waived following a poor performance in Thursday’s preseason opener against the New York Giants. Primarily working with the second-team defense, Jones saw 33 snaps on Thursday. The third-year player out of the University of Mississippi allowed a 39-yard completion down the left sideline to Giants WR Alonzo Russell.

Jones saw action in four regular-season games over the 2017 and 2018 seasons. A two-way player at Ole Miss, Jones could never find his footing in the cornerback room. Jones looked like a viable backup in training camp last season but failed to leave a positive impression on the Jets’ new regime.

Another former Jet found a new home on Sunday, as the Jaguars signed Ben Ijalana to a one-year deal. He’ll provide depth in Jacksonville.

From 2013-18, Ijalana started 30 games for the Jets. He signed multiple extensions with the team and served as a formidable backup tackle.

New York declined Ijalana’s second-year option but later re-signed him for the 2018 season. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a shoulder/collarbone injury during joint-practices with the Washington Redskins.

The Jets travel to Jacksonville on Oct. 27 and will have a chance to play their old friend, if he does indeed make the Jaguars.
