Pair of centuries from Linlithgow batsmen all for nothing as Challenge Cup game abandoned

Persistent rain meant centuries from both Gregor Thomson and Duncan Heslop were for nothing as the First XI saw their Challenge Cup tie with Dundee HSFP abandoned with no result on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, and were sitting on 246-4 when the heavens opened. Thomson had reached 107 with Heslop a run better off when play was called off with the outcome now likely to be determined by a replay.

The previous day, the had clinched a 45 run victory over Watsonians to climb into second place in the East of Scotland Division One table.

Linlithgow were 49-4 when Craig Black was joined at the crease by out of form Rory Saunders, with the pair providing an excellent platform for the rest of the innings.

Black fell just shy of a half-century as he was dismissed LBW on 48, while Saunders was caught for 56.

Rory Martin helped push the score along, adding 28 runs before being caught as Linlithgow scored a very respectable 197-7 from their 45 overs.

Watsonians came out with a lot of positive intent at the start of their innings as they raced past 50 in little time.

The introduction of first change bowlers Andrew Wallace and Martin saw the tide turn however.

Wickets began to tumble with Martin finishing with fine figures of 4-20 while Wallace grabbed three wickets for the loss of 36 runs as the away side’s innings lost all momentum as they fell from 61-1 to 87-8.

Linlithgow’s march towards victory was delayed by a fine battling performance from the lower order, but the visitors were eventually dismissed for 152 in the 35th over.

The Second XI continued their perfect start to the campaign and moved clear at the top of Division Five with a 39 run triumph over Drummond Trinity Third XI.

Linlithgow scored 206-4 with Connor Clark (82) grabbing his maiden half century while youngster Jame Szkudlarek added a fine 34.

The visitors restricted their hosts to 167 runs-9 from their allotted 40 overs to make it a perfect five wins from five.

This weekend, Linlithgow First XI travel to Fife to face Dunnikier with the Second XI at home to Morton Second XI.
