Pair get stuck in the mud as people 'ignore' lockdown

Two people got stuck in the mud off Burnham-on-Sea amid a surge in coastguard incidents across the UK.

HM Coastguard reported it had to deal with 97 incidents on Bank Holiday Friday, the most in a day since lockdown was announced on March 23.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency revealed two people got stuck off Berrow Wreck in Burnham around 12.30pm on Saturday.

A spokeswoman told Bristol Live: "Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team, Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team and the BARB hovercraft were sent to assist but a member of the public confirmed to Burnham CRT they’d seen both of the people return to the beach safe and well."

In a Facebook post, the Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The good weather has seen a rise in people using the open spaces of the beach.

"While walking along the beach a couple were spotted wandering out into the distance following the tide attempting to reach the water."

It added: "After a quick sweep by the hovercraft, a visual sweep by the team with binoculars and talking to a few helpful members of the public we managed to ascertain that they had indeed left the beach."

The average daily number of UK coastguard incidents for April was 63.

HM Coastguard’s duty commander Matt Leat told PA: “People are ignoring the measures put into place by the Government.

"However, as the Government said [this week], it’s really vital that we all continue to observe the guidance.

“Every time we get a 999 or distress call, we will always respond but the minute we send in a rescue response, we’re putting our frontline responders at risk as well as putting the NHS under avoidable pressure."

Mr Leat said people should observe Government instructions to stay home amid the coronavirus lockdown, unless there is a reasonable excuse.

"Exercise locally and stretch your legs, not our resources," he added.

It comes after Weston RNLI had to rescue three people cut off by the tide on Weston-super-Mare's Birnbeck Island on April 29.

That was one of four incidents in 10 days in late April requiring an emergency response at the derelict pier.

“I completely understand that the weather and the bank holiday, coupled with the fact that we’ve been in this lockdown situation for just over six weeks, has tempted people out to our beautiful coasts.
