A man and a woman have died in a single vehicle crash on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory.

According to NT Police, the man and woman — aged 74 and 67 — were found deceased by a passing motorist about 10km south of Larrimah last night.

Police officers from Mataranka and Maranboy attended the scene, with traffic diversions put in place overnight.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit, who travelled to the scene from Darwin, are investigating the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said the crash was a "tragic way to end a long weekend".

"While we are still investigating the causes of this crash, we'd just remind all road users to take extra care," he said.

"Slow down and take a break if you are travelling long distances."

Investigators are calling for any witnesses to the crash to contact police.

"A passing truck driver noticed the vehicle off the road around 6:30pm on Monday, 1 August and reported it to police, but we don't know exactly when the crash happened," Detective Sergeant Jeshua Kelly said.

"It's possible that other motorists passed the scene without realising it was a crash, so we're asking anyone who was travelling in the area on Monday to think back, check your dash-cams, and contact police if you remember anything about a grey Mitsubishi Pajero on the eastern side of the highway south of Larrimah."
