Pair deny $135k Tasmanian council fraud

A couple have faced court accused of defrauding a Tasmanian council to the tune of $135,000. (AAP)

A couple have pleaded not guilty to defrauding a Tasmanian council of $135,000 over seven years.

Casey Maree Bryant, 37, is facing more than a hundred charges in total, including counts of fraud, dishonestly acquiring a financial advantage and inserting false information as data.

She is accused of taking money from the Central Highlands Council between 2013 and 2020 and buying products for herself from a range of stores including Harvey Norman and Bunnings.

Bryant, who was charged by police in September, is also accused of illegally purchasing fuel and withdrawing money from the council's bank account and depositing it in her own.

Her husband Jamie Glen Bryant, 39, is jointly facing a handful of charges relating to fraudulent purchase orders from Beaurepaires, Bunnings and Harvey Norman.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday at Hobart Magistrates Court and are expected to again appear on September 23.

Police have alleged the council lost $135,000.
