Two teenagers were charged with carjacking a ride-hailing driver at gunpoint in February in West Garfield Park.

Jazzlyne Russell White, 18, of Parkway Gardens, and a 17-year-old boy each face a count of armed vehicular carjacking, Chicago police said in a statement.

They confronted a 56-year-old ride-hailing driver on Feb. 21 in the 3800 block of West Washington Street and took his vehicle, police said.

Officers found the pair in the same block on March 24 and arrested them, police said. The 17-year-old tried to run way but was arrested in the first block of South Pulaski Road.

Carjackings in Chicago have spiked over the last year, with police responding to 340 carjackings in January and February alone. In 2020, 1,417 carjackings were reported across the city, over double the year before.
