Pair charged after umbrella lady fought back against car thief

The woman was confronted by the man as she returned to her car from a supermarket.

Two people have been charged over the armed robbery of a woman in her 60s who tried to fight off a car thief with an umbrella.

The woman, 64, was confronted late last month after she left a supermarket on Chapman Road in St James in Perth's east.

Her attacker threatened her with a knife and demanded her car keys.

The woman responded by hitting the offender with her umbrella but sustained a cut to her hand in the struggle.

Her attacker managed to seize the woman's keys and drove away, knocking her down with the vehicle in the process.

She was left bruised and grazed but not was not seriously injured.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated armed robbery, robbery and possessing a smoking implement.

Police have also charged a 40-year-old man from the suburb of Maddington with stealing a motor vehicle, reckless driving and failure to stop in relation to an alleged police chase involving the woman's car at a later stage.
