Two men have been charged with committing racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage in the Stamford Hill area of north-east London, home to one of the UK’s largest Jewish communities.
The Metropolitan police said the men been charged in connection with a series of incidents of criminal damage which took place in the area over the weekend.
A police statement named them as Huseiyn Seyel, 27, of Atherton Road, Ilford, and Steven Truran, 25, of Eldon Road, Wood Green.
They will both appear on Wednesday at Thames magistrates’ court.
A 21-year-old man who was also arrested by police in connection with a series of attack on cars in Stamford Hill has been bailed, pending further inquiries by police, who are treating it as a racially-motivated crime.
The tyres on more than 40 cars parked in streets in Stamford Hill were slashed in the early hours of Monday morning, the Jewish Chronicle reported.
It quoted a spokesman for Shomrim, the volunteer community security group, the damaged cars were makes which were known to be favoured by local Jews. He said: “Tens of vehicles were targeted, with the trend being Volvos and people-carriers of various makes, which are very popular vehicles amongst the Jewish community.”
