A woman has had her car stolen at knifepoint while stopped at traffic lights in Adelaide's north this morning.

Police said the woman was at the corner of Main North Road and Edgeworth Street in Prospect about 9:45am, when a man armed with a knife opened the passenger side door and demanded she get out of the car.

The victim got out of her Mazda sedan and the man got into the driver's seat, while another woman entered the passenger seat before the pair drove off.

Police tracked the car to the South Eastern Freeway at Callington, in the Adelaide Hills, and a brief pursuit began before being terminated for safety reasons.

The police, who had remained in the area, then discovered the car had collided with a light pole on the freeway's off-ramp to Swanport Road and the pair were arrested.

Police interviewed the man and woman but did not say whether charges have been laid.
