Pair accused of Seel Street attack which left man with "life altering injuries" appear in court

Two men accused of a street attack in Liverpool city centre which left a man with “life altering” injuries have appeared in court.

Matthew Webber, 29, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after sustaining serious head injuries outside Heebie Jeebies nightclub.

Doctors placed Mr Webber in a medically induced coma following the incident, which happened at the junction of Seel Street and Colquitt Street on August 8 at around 2.55am.

Police say he is still receiving treatment for what they have described as “life altering” injuries.

Joseph Musumeci and another man face allegations of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and assault.

Joseph is also charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.

Mr Webber and two friends were walking down Seel Street, intending to go to a takeaway, when Mr Webber was allegedly attacked.

One of his companions, Nicholas Cakebread, was also allegedly assaulted.

Joseph Musumeci, 28, of Meaden Way in Bognor Regis, West Sussex appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link from HMP Forest Bank.

The court heard that CCTV footage of the incident is yet to be viewed by lawyers representing the defendants.

Judge Andrew Hatton adjourned the plea and case management hearing until November 13.

A provisional trial, estimated to last four days, has been set for the week commencing February 1 next year.
