Painting your front door the right colour can add £4,000 your home's value

The colour you paint your front door can add thousands to the price of your house.

That's according to a new study by Sellhousefast.uk, which took a look at how different colours impacted values for similar homes.

It found that having a blue front door added an impressive £4,000 to prices, while a brown one actually lowered values by £700.

After blue, homes with white front doors were the next priciest - at £3,400 more expensive than average.

Red front doors added £1,800, black ones £1,000 and green ones £500.

Psychologist Lee Chambers said: “Colour is a powerful tool to communicate action, influence choice and even change people's mood. It can even influence physiological reactions."

He added: "The colour of your front door can influence a buyers initial perception. Our eyes are drawn to entrance points, so a front door is often one of the first things we notice.”

But you should keep it neutral whatever the shade you choose to make sure your home gets sold faster.

Alex Willcocks of Burbeck Interiors said: “Extreme colours for doors are great if you want to inject your personality into your property but aren't great for selling houses.

"I would recommend painting your front door a neutral colour, or for a more modern property, opt for a more contemporary style as a focal point.”

What different door colours say about your home

  • Red - seen as very traditional, like a post-box, and conveys a vibrant, passionate personality inside

  • Green - a trusting, grounded personality and represents growth

  • White - more modern, clean, and organised in some respects, and peaceful in others

  • Brown - usually wooden, promotes a more natural sense, strong and stable

  • Black - can be mysterious but can also be stylish and sophisticated

  • Blue - can promote a feeling of serenity and promotes an appealing sense of freedom
