Painstaking job of moving Banksy to its new home

If you've ever wondered how much effort is involved in moving a piece of street art from one location to another read on.

Work has started to remove the Port Talbot Banksy from its original location - on May 29, Season's Greetings will be re-located from the Taibach garage wall where it first appeared days before Christmas.

Preparation work is currently underway at the site of the now-famous garage reports Wales Online.

In January, art dealer John Brandler revealed he had bought the Port Talbot Bansky for an unspecified six-figure sum with the intention of loaning the artwork in the town for two years.

The Bansky expert later announced plans to open the world's sixth street art museum in the town centre, which would feature the work of other renowned artists as well as Season's Greetings for an extended period of three years.

The removal

Before it can be moved, the 4.5 tonne garage wall featuring Wales's first Bansky piece must first be covered in specialist resin to make sure the area sets.

A wooden framework will then be built to "sandwich" the graffiti and make sure it does not break.

The work will be undertaken by Baglan -based company Andrew Scott Ltd, which was appointed by the art dealer.

It is hoped that the street art museum would also feature work by Damien Hirst, French graffiti artist Blek le Rat and Swansea-based street artist Pure Evil.

These are the 21 people who make Bristol a happier city to live in

A spokesman for Neath Port Talbot Council said: "The Council has proposed a three year loan agreement to Mr Brandler to overcome these issues and ensure the Banksy can be located in the town centre. We are pressing ahead to make this happen.

“The gallery proposal is still live and the Council along with partners are seeking to bring that proposition to fruition as a second phase of the relocation".
