Painful tributes to 'beautifully quirky' student who went to bed and never woke up

Painful tributes to a "beautifully quirky" student have been shared by her heartbroken husband and mum.

Shannon May Platt died in her sleep after a night in with friends, leaving everyone who knew her devastated.

The 23-year-old mum went to bed and never woke up on a trip to Wirral on December 29, 2019 with her husband Jamie to visit friends.

Shannon, who was studying History at the time of her death, leaves behind her 10-month-old baby Wilhelmina.

Paying tribute to her, Shannon's husband Jamie said: "Shannon was the most kind and amazing person you could ever wish to meet - and the sudden death of my beloved wife will always leave my heart broken.

"She was an amazing mum and friend - and I was honoured to call her my wife, my best friend and the mother to our child and I will always carry her in my heart."

Lynsey Ash, Shannon's mum, also described her daughter as "beautifully quirky" and said it "breaks her heart" that she won't get to see Wilhelmina grow up.

An inquest into Shannon's death on Wednesday found that the former carer died after consuming a large amount of alcohol.

The court heard how on December 28 Shannon, who was living in Wrexham, North Wales, had travelled to Upton, Wirral, to see friends along with her husband, Jamie Platt.

Senior coroner Andre Rebello said: "Jamie and Shannon travelled from Wrexham to an address in Upton where she tragically died, and during that evening a large quantity of alcohol was drank by all.

"She became very drunk, and at one stage she was put in the recovery position and left in the bedroom at 2am.

"She appeared to be asleep and breathing and the lights were turned off."

Tragically, some time later, when checked on, Shannon's lips had "turned blue" and she was cold to touch, the court heard.

Paramedics were called after CPR had been administrated, but they confirmed Shannon had sadly passed away at 4.32am.

Reading aloud evidence at Gerard Majella Courthouse, Mr Rebello said doctor's reports confirmed Shannon was three and a half times over the driving limit, with 298mgs of alcohol per 100ml in her blood.

Recording Shannon's death as a death by misadventure, Mr Rebello said Shannon will have simply stopped breathing while asleep.

Mr Rebello said she will have known "very little" this was happening though, and added "She will have slipped away in her sleep".

Tributes to Shannon also flooded in on social media for Shannon as many also shared messages of condolences to her husband and daughter.

Frances Hayes said: "This is so sad, 23.

"And it’s every mother’s worst nightmare to leave their kids behind."

Deborah Jane Heywood also said: "So sad. Rest in peace."
