'Pain' - Arsenal fans spot damning UEFA Champions League stat amid start of new competition

Arsenal have the most wins in UEFA Champions League history for a side who have never won the trophy, as many of their fans have spotted on social media.

The Gunners came extremely close to winning the competition in 2006. However, after going down to 10-men because of an early red card shown to goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, they were eventually defeated 2-1 in the final by Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona in Paris.

And after several seasons of disappointment by the club’s high standards (including back to back eighth-place finishes) Arsenal don’t look as though they’ll be winning the Champions League any time soon.

In fact, their immediate aim will involve qualifying for European competition again after missing out for the first time in 25 years last season following a second consecutive eighth place finish in the Premier League under Mikel Arteta.

Nevertheless, Gunners fans have enjoyed some wonderful nights in Europe’s most foremost tournament in the past, which is emphasised by the fact they have won a total of 83 games in the competition, the most out of any team who have never lifted the trophy.

PSG are next with 66 wins, whilst domestic rivals Manchester City – who incidentally made the final last time out – have won 49 games but haven’t managed to get over the line just yet.

Whilst winning so many games at such a prestigious level is admirable, Arsenal fans have been saddened by this statistic, and believe they should’ve won when they had one of the best squad’s in the world.

Just take a look at what’s been said on Reddit.

This season’s tournament gets underway this week. Arsenal are sadly not involved but Arteta will be hoping he can turn things around at the Emirates so that fans can enjoy Champions League nights once again.
