Paignton Green funfair: Teen found unconscious as police and air ambulance race to scene

An 18-year-old teenager has fallen unconscious whilst enjoying a funfair ride, leading to emergency services racing to the scene.

Punters should have been enjoying a late spring evening at the fair under blue skies as they rode the rides on offer.

However, the fair took a tragic turn as an air ambulance along with other emergency vehicles rushed to the Paignton Green Fun Fair this evening.

A teenager had passed out whilst riding on one of the rides, leading to the emergency.

There was no accident in the ride itself and the young man’s family have been informed of what happened.

One eyewitness said: "There's been a major incident at the fair on the green and the fair has shut".

Images from the scene show the air ambulance where it landed nearby after the police were alerted to the incident around 6pm.

The 18-year-old remains in a critical but stable condition at Torbay District Hospital police confirmed.

A spokesperson for Anderton & Rowlands Fun Fair released a statement about the incident.

It reads: "At approximately 6pm today, an incident occured on one of our rides. The passenger, a male in his early 20s, passed out whilst the ride was operation.

“When the ride stopped, he was put into the recovery position and an ambulance was called. There was no accident or defect on the ride.

"We are in contact with the boy's family. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him again soon."

The spokesperson also confirmed that the funfair is expected to reopen tomorrow.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called just after 6pm on Tuesday 31 May following concern for the welfare of a teenager at Paignton Green funfair.

"The 18-year-old had collapsed and become unresponsive while on one of the fairground rides.

"Ambulance and the air ambulance attended.

"The teenager was taken by ambulance to Torbay District Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition. Enquiries continue as to how the teenager became unwell."

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “We were called at 17.53hrs on Tuesday 31 May to an incident on Paignton Green.

"We sent an air ambulance, an operations officer, and two double-crewed land ambulances. We conveyed one patient to Torbay Hospital by land ambulance”.
