Page man granted bail after being charged with possessing child abuse material

A Page man has been granted bail after being arrested for possessing child exploitation material.

Peter Robert Cobcroft fronted the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday via audio-visual link from a remote room.

He was dressed in a hooded jumper featuring a Doctor Who TARDIS image, and did not enter pleas to two charges: possessing child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service, and possessing child exploitation material.

When Magistrate James Lawton read Mr Cobcroft the first charge, the 50-year-old answered "yes".

In a statement, police said Mr Cobcroft was arrested on Thursday following an investigation by the ACT's Joint Anti Child Exploitation team.

They alleged a search of his house was carried out, and officers found child abuse material on "several electronic and data storage devices".

Prosecutors told the court on Friday police were initially concerned about Mr Cobcroft's mental health, but he was later deemed not suitable for treatment.

They did not oppose his bail application, and Mr Lawton granted him liberty on conditions including that he not be within 100 metres of a school or childcare centre, not possess electronic devices, and continue to live at his current address.

Prosecutors said Mr Cobcroft did not have a criminal history.

He is due in court again on September 17.
