Paedophile filmed girls in toilets using hidden camera and took footage of girl in changing rooms

A paedophile took "disgusting" videos of girls using a shared toilet by hiding a camera inside a wooden box.

Lee Holland, 54, of Abergavenny, carried out the perverted acts over a three-year period in which he covertly filmed his unsuspecting victims for his own sexual gratification.

On one occasion Holland also filmed a child in the changing rooms at Abergavenny leisure centre, which he added to his collection of images.

A raid at his home on December 9, 2019, resulted in the discovery of indecent images of children, the youngest of which was just seven.

Speaking at a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday, Judge Michael Fitton QC said: "It was accepted you were addicted to pornography and for the purpose of self-validation became hooked on using porn and chatlines.

"You deny sexual gratification from the observation of all this imagery but in the context of everything you have done I don't find that at all credible. You have found yourself in time to become attracted to young females and you can't bring yourself to accept having at one stage become a paedophile.

"It's an addiction or obsession with paedophiliac imagery and the extent you allowed that to develop led you to setting up a camera to record girls using a lavatory. It's shocking and disgusting."

Prosecutor Jenny Yeo read out a number of victim personal statements from Holland's victims, who have lifelong anonymity.

The first described feeling "shocked" and described her privacy being violated which made her feel "physically sick". She also described Holland's actions as "disturbing".

The second victim said she cried after being told of the offence and felt "completely violated, anxious, and paranoid". Another victim said she had trouble sleeping, was "in disbelief," and was now worried about going to the bathroom.

The fourth victim described the offences as "grossly disgusting" while another said she felt "anger, violated and disgust" towards the defendant. The final victim said: "This will affect us for the rest of our lives."

Among the indecent images found on Holland's desktop computer were four Category A images, 12 Category B images and 200 Category C images, including the images of his victims.

Holland, of Holywell Road East, admitted three counts of possessing indecent images of children and six counts of observing a person doing a private act.

In mitigation defence barrister Karl Williams said his client wished to apologise to the victims and felt "deeply ashamed for the devastation he has caused".

The barrister said after a period of stress Holland began using chatlines and purchased a small video camera which led to a "degree of excitement with the subterfuge he engaged in".

Mr Williams claimed the defendant, who was employed as a bridge surveyor, stopped offending before being arrested and had been attending therapy sessions to combat his addictions.

Holland was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order, the length and terms of which will be dealt with at a court hearing on March 29.
