Padres will start Mike Clevinger in Game 1 against Dodgers

ARLINGTON, Texas _ Mike Clevinger is on the Padres' roster for the National League Division Series and is their starter in Game 1.

The team announced Tuesday morning the right-hander will take the mound against the Dodgers.

The Padres had prepared both Clevinger and Chris Paddack for the start, in case Clevinger was not ready to go.

Clevinger departed his Sept. 23 start with what was later diagnosed as a posterior elbow impingement, for which he received a cortisone shot Sept. 25. After throwing a bullpen the day before the wild-card series, he was left off that roster.

He threw a bullpen here Sunday and was pain free afterward.

While the Padres have acknowledged they don't know how long Clevinger can go _ he hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks and has thrown one inning since Sept. 13 _ his health is a great boost for them in the five-game series.

With right-hander Dinelson Lamet also sidelined in the wild-card series and starters Chris Paddack and Zach Davies faltering, the bullpen had to pick up 22 2/3 innings in three games against the Cardinals.

Lamet, whose arm ailment has been described as tightness in the biceps/elbow area, is not on the roster for this series.

The Padres also added left-handed reliever Ryan Weathers, their third-ranked pitching prospect. The 20-year-old is expected to be used out of the bullpen.

Outfielder Greg Allen is also on the roster, while the team removed infielder Greg Garcia, outfielder Jorge Mateo and right-handed reliever Dan Altavilla.
