CINCINNATI _ Travis Wood was drafted by the Reds in the second round in 2005. He threw 73 innings at Great American Ball Park before he was traded to Cubs in December 2011. He'd made 14 more appearances there as an NL Central rival.
The 30-year-old left-hander knows how unforgiving the Reds' park is. His experience here didn't save him Wednesday night.
In his third start for his new team, Wood surrendered a pair of two-run homers, walked four more and exited after five innings in an 8-3 loss, his shakiest yet since joining the Padres rotation last month.
Wood struck out seven over six two-hit, two-run innings in his initial start upon the Padres freeing him from the Royals' bullpen. He labored in giving up four runs in five innings in a no-decision in Pittsburgh. Then he trailed from the start in Cincinnati, where he's now got a 4.94 ERA over 30 appearances.
One-time teammate Joey Votto doubled with two outs in the first. After back-to-back walks, Jose Peraza singled in a pair of runs. Eugenio Suarez followed Adam Duvall's two-out double with a home run in the third and Stuart Turner's blast, the first of his career, cashed in Cory Spangenberg's throwing error in the fifth on a two-run shot that opened up a 6-0 lead.
Wood threw 63 of his season-high 107 pitches for strikes. The four walks were also a season-high, while the seven hits were the most he'd given up in three starts with the Padres.
The Reds piled on two more runs in the sixth against Carter Capps, who allowed four hits in his second start since returning from his 2016 Tommy John surgery. He threw 19 of his 23 pitches for strikes but didn't miss a single bat: One run scored on Votto's groundout to first and another scored on Jose Peraza's single to center.
The Padres scored their three runs in the sixth, chasing rookie Asher Wojciechowski from the game on before the end of the inning. Manuel Margot led off the frame with his 10th homer, Yangervis Solarte doubled with two outs for his second hit of the game and Wil Myers hit his 22nd homer of the season to right to cut the Reds' lead to 6-3.
Myers' home run to right was his fourth of the year. He hit 13 right of center in 2016.
Hunter Renfroe's ensuing single ended Wojciechowski's night with seven hits allowed. The Reds' bullpen didn't yield another.
