Padres take opening series from Diamondbacks with third win

SAN DIEGO _ The Padres scored five runs before making an out in the fourth inning Monday at Petco Park.

In the process, they ran another Diamondbacks starter from the game early and then rode the bullpen to a 6-2 victory that clinched the teams' season-opening series.

After Trent Grisham's 411-foot home run put the Padres up 1-0 in the first inning, the Diamondbacks scored two runs off Joey Lucchesi in the third to take a 2-1 lead.

The first six Padres batters in the fourth reached base, the sixth being Fernando Tatis Jr., whose triple to the gap in left-center field cleared the loaded bases.

Luke Weaver finally retired a Padres batter, striking out Grisham before being pulled.

With their newfound selectivity and overall effectiveness at the plate, the Padres sent the final three Diamondbacks starters in the series to the clubhouse before the fifth inning.

Robbie Ray lasted just 3 2/3 innings Friday, and Zac Gallen went four innings Sunday.

For the first time in four games this season, the Padres' starting pitcher didn't make it five innings and allowed more than one run.

On a day when Cal Quantrill was ready and Lucchesi was on a short leash, manager Jayce Tingler pulled his starter with two outs and a runner on second in the fourth inning.

Quantrill (1-0) got the final out of that inning and worked a scoreless fifth before being replaced by Tim Hill to start the sixth. The lefty, making his second appearance in two days, retired the side in order.

Luis Perdomo then pitched two scoreless innings to get the ball to Craig Stammen for the ninth. Stammen needed six pitches to close out the game.

The only team in the National League with a 3-1 record, the Padres will leave this evening for a six-game road trip to San Francisco and Colorado.
